Our guest has identified himself as Francois – a member of the hushblades, and as it turns out has been sent to kill us. Francois is not able to identify who has put this bounty on our heads but as he is looking to get out of the lifestyle would like to make enough money to retire. A small price to pay for the ruse, a few galifars and thumbs to appease the employers of which one of those can be fixed by her grace. After the issue of our “assassination” is put to rest, I propose Francois puts his skills to use finding who ordered our death – and he seemed extremely interested with the potential for more earning with no further blood. We decide that we should not be seen in Arcanix for a while to further purpetuate the ruse of our demise and head to bed with plans to see Atticus before heading out to Passage once more.
Early morning rise we gather our belongings and head to see Atticus who while doesn’t have a lot of further information for us now has possession of one of the sending stones to keep in contact should anything arise while we are on the road. Atticus agrees that it cannot hurt to see what is happening in Karnath and Fort Zombie so our plan is made. We head to the agreed spot to meet our captain and we are greeted by familiar faces, a few quick greetings and we set sail. It is a fairly uneventful journey……. well apart from the Chuuls that beset us on the second day, but a brief skirmish with the abominations and we are safely on our way to Passage again. Using the time of our travel, Xenobia uses her googol stone to confirm some suspicions we had and with mixed results.
As soon as we land in Passage, we make way for the lightning rail. We attempt to purchase tickets but Kit steadfastly refuses to board. Our ticket vendor manages to assuage Kits fears with a magical trinket that would ensure her safety on the trip. With our express passes purchased and Kits token of safety, we board the train and prepare to depart. Lyn has smuggled one of the bottles of wine from the manor aboard and he and Magnus settle in for some relaxation and a drink or 4. The train is quickly in motion and I lay upon my bunk for some time of internal reflection. It has been some time since I have had the chance to truly reflect on myself and the light, I have not been successful struggling with the fire that burns too quickly within. I hope she will forgive me.
The time with my thoughts are brief as the air is cut with the familiar offensive rubbish that could only mean that members of the silver flame are also on board. With an internal groan I attempt to block them out……..it works…….. for only a moment. I attempt to sleep and finally slip into quiet nothing. We awake with the sun and as we rise, I am stopped by Magnus who has reached our little rooms door. Magnus points out a pool of blood coming from the door opposite ours, how curious. Magnus enters full law enforcement mode, and after attempting to open the door decides to break the lock open. Inside we find a large gentleman lying on his bunk, very clearly dead from a gaping wound in his chest. Magnus directs us that someone on the train has committed this crime and sets about investigating the scene. I do not know much about the art of tracking clues and such nonsense, I know people, so I head down to the person that would be the least likely to protect anyone – Snade the captive.
The poor woman has not been looked after, I grab some food and water for her and ask her about the crime. She seems taken aback when I describe the method in which the man was killed, Snade tells me that the same style of murder was what she is being charged with. I believe you can see the depth of someones soul if you look hard enough and they speak from the heart, when Snade tells me she is innocent….. I know she tells the truth. I leave her happy knowing that she has food and water in her belly and seek Magnus and Lyn. I advise them that I will prepare the magics to find the truth and we can get to the bottom of this mystery. Magnus it seems has also found a stowaway, which I did not think possible on the lightning rail but it seems I do not understand this technology thing. The zone of truth is cast and all on the train are interrogated, the silver flame members seem to evade my magic which causes me distrust but we can at least rule out the others. While under the influence Snade also boasts that she has never taken a life – this simply confirms what I already knew. Darius – my main suspect evades the question.
After the first interrogation Magnus decides to search for the weapon as it must still be on board the carriage, and after a search finds the weapon in the latrine. The zone of truth is recast and Magnus interrogates those that were still in question and compels Darius to answer revealing that he indeed murdered the man and also knows of the framing attempt on Snade. Magnus takes Darius in custody and I prepare the body to save it from decay on the journey to provide to King Kaius. Now all is left to do is to decide what to tell the king, how much of it to tell and what he will hear……… I have never met a king before.
